When your AC or heater stops working, it’s easy to assume the worst. But sometimes, the fix is simple and you might be able to solve the issue yourself before scheduling a service call. As a local HVAC pro serving Mesquite and the surrounding areas, we want to save you time and money whenever we can.
Here are 5 quick troubleshooting tips every homeowner should try before picking up the phone.
Check Your Thermostat Settings
It sounds basic, but it happens all the time, especially if someone else in the home adjusted the settings.
- Make sure it’s set to “Cool” in summer or “Heat” in winter.
- Double-check that the temperature is set properly.
- If it runs on batteries, swap them out, dead batteries can shut the whole system down.
Inspect the Air Filter
A clogged air filter can cause poor airflow, freezing, and even system shutdowns.
- Pull out the filter and hold it up to the light. If you can’t see through it, it’s time to replace it.
- For best results, change filters every 1–3 months depending on usage and home conditions.
Look at Your Circuit Breaker
Sometimes, the system may trip the breaker, especially during power surges or storms.
- Head to your electrical panel and look for any tripped breakers (usually in the middle position).
- Flip it fully OFF, then back ON to reset.
- If the breaker trips again shortly after resetting, call Admirable Air. That could be a sign of a deeper electrical issue.
Make Sure the Outdoor Unit Has Power
If your outdoor AC unit isn’t running:
- Check that the disconnect switch (usually a grey box on the wall near the unit) is plugged in or turned on.
- Make sure the condensate drain line isn’t clogged. Some systems will shut off to prevent water overflow if the drain backs up.
Check for Ice on the Coils
If your system is running but not cooling, frozen evaporator coils could be the problem.
- Look inside the indoor unit or peek at the copper lines. If you see ice, turn the system OFF and set the fan to ON at the thermostat to help it thaw.
- This is often caused by a dirty filter or low refrigerant; either way, give us a call once it’s thawed so we can inspect further.
